Run 1: My First Running Playlist

Some people can listen to anything when they run, some listen to the same music that they would listen to any other time. For me, it's half and half. Some of my running songs (typically those in the alternative rock spectrum), are songs I would listen to anyway, and others I would never listen to if it weren't for their power to help me push through my runs. "Run 1" is mostly the former, and still one of my favorite playlists to run with.

Creative name, huh? "Run 1," it's the first running playlist I made when I started doing couch to 5k in 2012. Creating a good running playlist is an art, really. The songs have to be motivating, upbeat, and distracting, all in the right ways. They can't have long intros or interludes, and the lyrics can't say things like "it's getting harder and harder to breath," or talk about being hot or drowning. Sometimes you make a playlist only to later find out that a song or two on it just doesn't work for you while you're running, and you have to make a mental note to remove it later. This playlist was actually put together over time, starting with around 30 minutes of music and through removing what didn't work and adding more variety it has grown to over 2 hours.

  1. I have actually added an instrumental piece to my list for the first time. Check out Piano Guys mash up of Vivaldi and "Let it Go" - every time I hear it on a run it makes me take in the moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Dakd7EIgBE The passion these guys play with seems to transfer into my run and I end up listening to it 2 or 3 times in a row.

    1. I tend to stay away from instrumentals for my running playlists, but that mashup is pretty good. Maybe I'll make an all instrumental playlist sometime.
      Thanks for sharing!
