I really wanted to write some "Rants and Raves" about the Swamp Forest Trail race I did this weekend but I want to give it a little more time so I don't say anything to rash and later wish I hadn't. The race itself was great, so don't get the wrong impression; it was awesome and I'm glad I did it. More about that later this week.
2015 had a couple of firsts, my baby had his first birthday, my oldest had his first day of preschool, and this blog had its first post. I've had blogs on other subjects before, but it had been over a year since my last and I was ready to really commit to this one and I think I found a good niche and am able to write from a welcomed perspective.
Will has really enjoyed school and I'm glad. We had previously considered homeschooling but figured we would try VPK since it was free and see if it was a good fit. I think it has been and we're going to try to get a scholarship so he can stay in the same school for kindergarten. Since Will started, Lorelai has asked at least once a week if she is 4 yet. She's ready to go to school too (she'll be in VPK August of this year), and she is so smart!
I've read more books in 2015 than I have since any of my kids were born. Hopefully that number will continue to go up too. The number of books read, not the number of kids. I did Whole30 and PiYo and wrote a good amount of reviews. I even made a little bit of money from this blog.
In 2015 I ran my first half marathon, and my longest run to date, 14 miles. I had my highest mileage weeks since I started running and my longest bike rides. I met a lot of great people through running and biking this year, and now regularly get up early to run with a group, something I once thought just wasn't for me. I also did my first duathlon (after chickening out of the swim). All that will be topped this year though. I'm going to try to do some real swim training.
In 2016, I will run my first full marathon! I've already had one first this year and that was my first trail half yesterday. I really surprised myself with my time, running it in just 12 minutes more time than my flat, road half. This was 90% single track, technical trails. There I go talking about the race I said I wouldn't talk about yet.
I also hope to break some PRs this year. My 5k PR was set almost 3 years ago, and it was the one time I raced with someone else's bib, so it's not even on my record. I'm sure I could have beaten it by now if I had spent more time trying to be fast, or even just ran more 5ks. I didn't do many races in 2015 at all, 2014 either because I was pregnant and had a baby. So, after my full marathon in March, I want to focus on getting faster. Which will be a good time to do that since it will start heating up here and who wants to do long runs in the heat? Well, who wants to do speed work in the heat either? At least you're out in it for a shorter amount of time. Plus, I don't mind short runs on the treadmill so much if I need to do that. I'm thinking I'll switch my long runs to be by time instead of distance while I do more targeted speed work during the week. I'd like a 10k PR too, the only 10k I've ran is Springtime Tallahassee and it's the week after my full, so I don't want to get my hopes up for a PR there.
So, I started this post this morning, got distracted by life and now it's almost 8pm. I think I'm done? We'll say that's all I was going to write, I'll be back tomorrow anyway.
Tell me a highlight from your 2015.
What goals do you have for 2016 (running or other)?
