Not a Running Playlist, Podcasts!

Back when iTunes and podcasts were a relitively new thing, I tried to be a podcast listener. I only remember one I really liked, The Bored Again Christian podcast. I tried to like others but my main problem was when to listen to them. In the car, I'd rather listen to music. I didn't have the kind of job where I could listen to anything and it's impossible to pay attention to someone talking while studying or writing a paper. I could occasionally just relax and listen to a podcast but it didn't happen very often.

Now that I'm a runner, a runner training for a marathon at that, I have the perfect opportunity to listen to a podcast. I even listen to them on the treadmill now. At first I thought I preferred watching something on Netflix while on the treadmill, but now I find myself torn between the two. Sometimes it's nice not to have to try and focus my eyes on something while bouncing up and down. While I still listen to music a lot while running and have shared playlists with you before, I've started to listen to podcasts more and more when I'm running solo. So today I want to share with you some of my favorites to listen to and I hope you'll share yours with me if you listen to podcasts. I'm always looking for new ones to love.

Serial leaflet from season 2's case
Serial - Of course, Serial is the podcast everyone has to listen to now. If you haven't heard of it, then you must not listen to podcasts and/or you live under a rock. Now on season 2, Serial is investigative reporting that follows a true news story with conflict/mystery surrounding it and tries to get to the bottom of things by interviewing witnesses and experts. Season 2 has yet to captivate me the way season 1 did, but I'm still listening.

Spilled Milk - This is my favorite podcast! If you don't have at least a little bit of a "foodie" in you, then don't bother. Hosted by two food authors, Spilled Milk explores different types of food and ways to prepare them; they also talk about "scary foods" and junk food, and constantly make me laugh. I'm still catching up on episodes from 2011, so I'm glad I have a lot left to listen to.

Francis Chan

Crazy Love Podcast - I love the teachings from Francis Chan (Crazy Love, Erasing Hell, Forgotten God) and we did his "Crazy Love" video series in our small group a while back. I just started listening to his sermons through this podcast but have already felt convicted and moved by his sharing and explanations of God's word. I know a lot of people like to use their private running time as a way to connect with God and pray and this podcast is wonderful conductor for that.

Happier with Gretchen Rubin - You may have heard of Gretchen Rubin before, she's the author of the books The Happiness Project, Happier at Home, and Better than Before. She also writes a blog at GretchenRubin.com. She's being doing a podcast with her sister, Elizabeth Craft, for almost a year now. They share suggestions on how to make your life happier and share their own happiness journeys.

Another Mother Runner - This is the podcast that every "Mother Runner" is supposed to listen to. Honestly, while I love the books from Dimity McDowell and Sarah Bowen Shea, I skip a lot of the podcasts. Often the subject just isn't that interesting to me. I'm more interesting in the podcasts that provide tips on racing and training than I am in interviews with pro runners or shoe company execs. So, this one is worth checking out, but it you don't like the first episode you hear, try another.

Relevant Podcast - I've listened to this one on and off since it started, it's the podcast from Relevant Magazine (if you're not familiar, this is a Christianity/lifestyle/culture magazine geared towards twentysomethings). It's another one that I often skip through and often seems to have inside jokes that I don't get. I do often discover some new music to listen to through it though.

I have a few others that I'm checking out but these are the podcasts I really like right now.

Do you listen to podcasts when you run (or other times)?

What is your favorite and why?
